French Response, the X account run by the Quai d’Orsay to answer disinformation with satire, has earned plenty of praise. In a tribune in Le Monde, Nicolas Hénin and I argue that it is a tactical response, not a strategic one: it deals with content, not channels. As long as government communication keeps favouring — and legitimising — a platform that openly interferes in French and European politics, it will be stuck rebutting the lies it helps amplify. The state should instead invest in healthy, well-governed digital platforms: digital sovereignty is built in steps, and if institutions don’t move, the public won’t either. (In French.)
