Digital sovereignty can’t be bargained away
With a leaked memo from the US–EU trade talks suggesting Brussels might water down tech enforcement in hopes of lower tariffs, Cori Crider and I wrote in POLITICO Europe that this would be a serious error, strategically and politically — polling shows strong majorities of Europeans want the EU’s digital laws enforced even if it upsets Trump. What Europe needs is a coordinated play: break entrenched monopolies, starting with Google; enforce the Digital Markets Act with the resources it deserves; and build shared infrastructure for search and social media, funded in part by what is reclaimed from the monopolies.
